Photos of Valdosta, Georgia

This page contains photos of Valdosta, Georgia, USA.
All photos taken by me.

I have been living in Valdosta since 10 June 2003.

Most of the photos were taken with a Pentax Spotmatic II or other 35mm SLR which uses M42 lenses. A few were taken with a Bessa L. Two photos were taken with a Zorki-4, which is a Russian-made 35mm rangefinder.

27 August 2003 -- 11:41am -- 28mm lens on Pentax Spotmatic II

CSX train going east to west just south of downtown Valdosta.

The yellow building, about one-third of the frame from the left, is called "Southern Salvage". It appears in several of my photos.

The train is crossing Ashley Street. We are just east of the US41 overpass. Looking north.

If you check the CSX Locomotive Roster (which you can find on the internet) you learn that CSX locomotives numbered from 5783 to 5925 are model B36-7. These are 3600-horsepower locomotives made by General Electric.

Looking north on Ashley Street toward downtown Valdosta.

The yellow building on the right also appears in the first train photo. The tall building on the left, which is now senior citizen housing, was formerly the Daniel Ashley Hotel.

When you first hear "Valdosta, Georgia" you probably think it's in the former Soviet Union. Wrong ! It's in the USA, just outside Florida.

Valdosta has a population of about 43.7k and is the seat of Lowndes County. Interstate 75 runs along the west side of Valdosta.

Valdosta has an airport with passenger service. It only flies to Hartsfield in Atlanta.
Valdosta is also served by Greyhound. There is no passenger train service to Valdosta.

This is taken from the same general area as the train photo. Looking north toward the downtown area. This is with a 135mm telephoto lens on Spotmatic II.

This is the yellow building at the south end of the downtown area seen through a fisheye lens.

I had just bought the fisheye lens and I was trying it out. Fisheye lenses are useful when you are surrounded by, or inside-of, the subject you are photographing. They are not appropriate for wildlife.

Taken 24 Dec 2005 3:20pm. 8mm Peleng lens on Spotmatic II. Sensia film. Full-size is 190k 860x806.

This is taken at corner of Hill and Ashley looking north along Ashley.

Downtown Valdosta

This is Ashley Street in the middle of the block between Hill and Central. About a block north of that yellow building "Southern Salvage".

The clock is broken. The photo was taken at 11:00am. (Clock has been fixed and was working in summer of 2004.) Building in the center is a theatre.

These next three are really big, so I made thumbnails. Click on the little photo. Use BACK to return. You could also right click and click on "open in new window" which might be faster on some systems.

Everyone should be taking photos of their home towns and pasting them up on the internet. I think it's fun to look at photos of towns.
