Corn Snake
Elaphe guttata

Small corn snake. On the road near the Okefenokee Swamp in SE Georgia 10:00pm on 18 July 2007.

Photographed in north Florida, near Perry, on 6 November 2007 at 11:18am.

This snake is more brown than what I am accustomed to seeing. Maybe four feet long (and skinny).

These are the first two photos on my website taken with a digital camera -- a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ8.

Gray Rat Snake
Elaphe obsoleta

Taken in Valdosta, Georgia on 19 April 2006 approx 2:00pm.
This is the normal color and pattern that I see around Valdosta. Possibly the snake becomes more brown as it matures. Note that there are broken lines running along the snake's length at the positions that you would find lines on a Yellow Rat Snake.
This snake was something like three feet in length.

The next two photos of the same rat snake. I took them on 10 Jan 2008 at about 1:20pm at Reed Bingham State Park in south central Georgia. This is about a three-fout snake.

Corn Snake
Elaphe guttata
15 March 2002 --- South of Florida City --- 7:11 pm
Photo taken with 135mm lens on extension tube, flash
This is a very small corn snake, maybe 20 inches.

Photo was taken on a road just after sunset.

The snake had extended the front part of his body over the water in a canal. Maybe he was fishing. This is not a safe place for a snake because there are alligators in the canal. I got several photos before he fled in panic. The snake fled away from the canal; it did not swim across.
