Puerto Rican Crested Anole
Anolis cristatellus
Anole in Puerto Rico. Taken in September, 1998 in vicinity of San Germán.

Puerto Rico is covered with these lizards. They are even on the walls of buildings in the centers of towns. This type of lizard is about 3 inches in length, not including the tail. The tail is about 150% of the body length for at total length of 7.5 inches.

The other common lizard (besides the anoles) in Puerto Rico is this species, which is in the Teiid family. These stay on the ground and are always running. I took this photo in October, 1998, just west of San Germán, Puerto Rico. This type of lizard is typically 5 to 7 inches in length, not including the tail.
