Along irrigation canal north of Tehuantepec, in state of Oaxaca, Mexico. The irrigation canals north of Tehuantepec are loaded with basilisks. As you walk along the canal you hear the "plop, plop, plop" of the basilisks jumping into the water. Just like hearing frogs along a creek or lake in the U.S.

I believe this individual is a female; the males have little crests on their heads. I shot the photo looking down from a bridge.
The Brown Basilisk is about five to eight inches in length, not including the very long tail.

Also known as a Striped Basilisk.

Brown Basilisk
Basiliscus vittatus
I base identification of this lizard on the book Tropical Mexico by Les Beletsky.

Gecko in Oaxaca City. 28 Nov 1999. I took this in the courtyard right outside my apartment in Oaxaca. 135mm lens on bellows, flash.

Black Iguana
There are several iguana species which are known as Black Iguanas. I was told that this is Ctenosaura pectinata by the people over at West Coast Iguana. I gave them permission to use this photo on their site.

I took this photo in the little garden behind the swimming pool at Hotel Nayar in Puerto Escondido. (state of Oaxaca, Mexico). If you visit Puerto Escondido, stay at Hotel Nayar. The garden/dump-site is full of iguanas. Iguanas are enormous in relation to any other lizards I have seen. They can grow to a total length of six feet.

27 June 2000, South of the Oaxaca airport near Rio Valiente. This lizard is about 5 - 6 inches in length, plus the tail. This species is difficult to photograph because it does not stand still very much.
Ameiva

Anole in Oaxaca, Mexico. I took the photo in August, 1999 on a hillside just east of Oaxaca City, Mexico. This is the only individual of this species which I saw. I saw only a few other anoles in Oaxaca.
