Great American Southwest Photos
  California, Nevada, Arizona

This page contains my photos from California, Nevada, and Arizona.

My mother moved to California in 2002. So in October, 2003, for the first time in my life, I traveled to California to visit her. I went again in October 2004 and again in October 2005.

For the 2003 and 2004 trips I flew to Las Vegas, rented a car, and drove around for a few days. Both trips basically followed the route
Vegas --> Barstow --> Bakersfield --> Fresno and back the same way, but in 2004 I went from Bakersfield to the Pacific coast near San Luis Obispo and followed the coast up to Monterey.

In 2005 I drove the entire distance to California and back from Valdosta, Georgia.

Coyote at Death Valley

I was driving south to north through Death Valley. (I went from Barstow, CA to Pahrump, NV that day.) The coyote ran across the road ahead of me (right to left, which is east to west). This was a little north of Badwater. The coyote was not terrified of me, but was not very cooperative either.

Elk at Grand Canyon

20 Oct 2005 -- 7:55am -- Sensia film -- 150mm lens.

I found this elk right along Arizona Highway 64 a little after passing the fee station to enter Grand Canyon National Park. I was driving from Williams, AZ to the south rim of the canyon. I pulled to the side of the road and took several photos from my car window.

The elk did not seem perturbed by the traffic passing him in both directions. There was another elk, nearly hidden behind trees, just off the road (not visible in photo).

Photo taken at 7:55am local time (which is 10:55am Eastern time). Arizona is in the Mountain Time Zone, but does not celebrate Daylight Saving Time, so except during the winter, the clocks in Arizona are set the same as the clocks in California.

Historic Route US66 runs east and west through Barstow. A busy railroad line parallels Route 66 to the north. There are two bridges in the downtown area over the railroad. The western bridge is the iron-framed structure in the first two photos. The third (rightmost) photo was taken from the other (eastern) bridge.

Petrified Forest National Park

Don't skip the Petrified Forest, if you're out that way. The scale is not as big as the Grand Canyon, but the landscapes look like they're from another world. And there's petrified wood.

All 2004 photos were taken with Pentax Spotmatic II using Fujifilm Sensia film. Lizard and tortoise photos taken with 100mm macro lens.

Long-nosed Leopard Lizard
Gambelia wislizenii

Other than the Western Fence Lizards, this is the only lizard that I spotted in California or Nevada in 2004. In 2003 I also saw some Whiptails (Racerunners) and the Alligator Lizard which I photographed.

Northern Elephant Seals
Mirounga angustirostris

Florida has alligators and crocodiles. California has seals and sea lions.

I took the following from http://www.pinnipeds.org/
Marine mammels like seals are called pinnipeds.
There are 33 species of pinnipeds (worldwide). These are grouped as:
   seals
   sea lions/fur seals
   walruses

There are 18 species of seals, 14 species of sea lions/fur seals, but only one species of walrus.

In California there are three species of pinnipeds (1) Harbor Seal (2) California Sea Lion (3) Northern Elephant Seal.
The only species that I found was this one.

Photo was taken with a 300mm lens from a viewing area which was full of tourists.

A few notes:
I plan my trip around buffet restaurants. I think they are fun to eat at. In a normal restaurant, they usually serve me a meal with more meat than I eat in a week. In a buffet restaurant I can just grab a mouthfull of everything. So I chose motels near buffet restaurants. In Bakersfield, San Luis Obispo, and Salinas I ate at a Home Town Buffet, which is very good and inexpensive.

At Barstow I ate at Carrow's Restaurant, not a buffet but good.

The Nugget Hotel and Casino in Pahrump had a buffet, but it was so crowded that I decided to eat at the McDonald's in their food court.

Both the Silverton and Sam's Town in Las Vegas have excellant buffet restaurants. Sam's Town is a very large operation, located at Boulder Highway and Flamingo. It was quite a long walk from my car to my hotel room and there was a long line at check-in.

I like the Silverton. (On Blue Diamond Road well south of the Las Vegas strip). But they have made me a little paranoid with the mini-bar approach. The rooms have mini-bars; you take what you want and they charge you for it. They also have small bottles of water, which cost $4 if you open them. When I checked-in they had me sign the receipt and initial next to three boxes which said "extra $10 if refrigerator is needed", "extra $15 if iron is needed", and something else which I forget. I didn't pay much attention, because I didn't need a refrigerator or an iron. When I was snooping around the room I opened the refrigerator and noticed that there was a sensor. I thought "God Damnit, now the sensor registered that that I opened the refrigerator and they are going to charge me another $10". I figured that is why they had me initial the box.

When I checked-out I asked about the refrigerator and they told me that they did not charge $10 if you open it. They did stick an extra $3.27 charge onto my credit card, which might have been for opening a bar of soap. They also put little bottles of shampoo in the room, which I am afraid to open. I am carefull to only use one towel and one wastebasket in case they charge for those also.

There was an iron in the room. I am sure that that also has a sensor which will charge you $15 if you touch it.

Red Rock Canyon, Nevada

I arrived in Las Vegas Monday evening, 6 Oct 2003. On Tuesday, 7 Oct 2003, I visited Red Rock Canyon, which is about 15 miles west of Las Vegas.

I drove into the Red Rock Canyon area on Highway 159. I stopped twice and walked a little to photograph the scenery and foliage. Then I stopped a third time at an area marked First Creek Hiking Trail.

Red Rock Canyon, 15 miles W of Las Vegas

I stayed at the Silverton Hotel and Casino, which is at the SW corner of Blue Diamond Road and Interstate 15. This is away from the congestion of the Las Vegas Strip and is convenient to Red Rock Canyon.

Click upon the above thumbnail for larger (77k) image.
I spent enough time at First Creek Hiking Trail that I never got to the main part of Red Rock Canyon -- the 12-mile scenic drive.

The burros at Red Rock Canyon do not flee from humans. Apparently people feed them, even though there are signs which say Do not feed burros. Burros bite.

I wandered around the hiking area for some time hearing burros baying (like "Hee Haw") without actually seeing them. Their gray color blends in with the scrub and rocks. Finally I found a group of about four burros. Later, while driving away, I found two more groups of about four burros each. All were approachible.

Donkey, ass, and burro are different names for the same animal -- Equus asinus My Webster New World College Dictionary says that they are called burros when they are used as pack animals.

Western Long-nosed Snake
Rhinocheilus lecontei

On Wednesday, 8 October 2003, I drove from Las Vegas to Barstow, CA. That evening I drove south on route 247 to look for snakes. About 6 miles south of Barstow at 7:10 pm, I found this one crossing the road.

8 Oct 2003 --- 7:10pm --- 100mm lens, flash

8 Oct 2003 --- 7:10pm --- 100mm lens, flash This is close-up of the same snake.

I am not familiar with western snakes, so if someone wants to correct or confirm the species, I would appreciate an email. I used the National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Reptiles and Amphibians to make the identification. This snake looks identical to photo number 593 in the Field Guide.

In four evening snake hunts -- two from Barstow and two from Las Vegas -- this is the only snake I found.

12 Oct 2003 --- 1:16pm --- 100mm lens, flash Southern Alligator Lizard
Elgaria multicarinata

My sister's husband found this Alligator Lizard for me by lifting some wood on his property north of Fresno.

Close-up of same lizard.

I like to get the best photo possible without touching an animal. I did, however, poke at the alligator lizard to get him to change position.

This lizard had a body about 6" long plus a tail about another 6" long. My brother-in-law said that this was a rather large individual.
