Snake photos. This page contains photos of the snake known as a Racer Coluber constrictor. Two subspecies of this snake are found in south Florida
Southern Black Racer
Everglades Racer As adults, the Southern Black Racer is shiny black with a white belly. The Everglades Racer is gray with a white belly. Racers are slender, fast-moving snakes. I use A Field Guide to Snakes of Florida by Alan Tennant to identify snake species. All information on this page concerning racers, other than my own observations, is taken from Tennant's book.
Southern Black Racers are found throughout Florida except
for a small area around Apalachicola National Forest.
Several other subspecies of this snake are found throughout the Eastern United States as far north as Maine. A subspecies found in extreme north Georgia is the Northern Black Racer. |

As juveniles the Everglades Racer and Southern Black Racer look similar.
The Everglades Racer, however, has a lighter iris.
Photo taken during the day while I was bicycling. This snake stayed still and allowed me to take several photos. |

Another juvenile Racer, more mature than the previous.
This photo was taken in the cactus section of Fairchild Tropical Gardens, which is on the Atlantic Ocean, south of Miami at about 104th Street. Tropical plants are displayed at the Gardens . There is considerable wildlife in the Gardens including Green Iguanas (which pet owners dump when they find out how big they get) and Knight Anoles. The wildlife is not restrained in any way. Taken 29 January 2001 at 10:30am --- 135mm lens on helicoid and extension tube, no flash. |
| This snake was on Gumbo Limbo Trail in Everglades National Park. Gumbo Limbo Trail is a very short hiking path at Royal Palm. I was walking along the path, bicycles are not permitted. The snake let me take several photos but fled when I stepped back. |

In Alan Tennant's book, A Field Guide to Snakes of Florida,
the range map does not agree with the text. The text says that the Southern Black
Racer is found throughout peninsular Florida whereas the map indicates that it does
not occur south of Interstate 75. In fact, both the Southern Black Racer and the Everglades Racer are found in the Everglades and Big Cypress areas. |
